26.06.2025 – The Union of Cypriots participated in the Resist NATO campaign, standing alongside anti-imperialist organizations from around the world in opposition to NATO’s annual summit and its broader agenda of militarism, war, and imperialist plunder.

Building on its launch in 2024 in Washington, DC, the Resist NATO campaign once again organized a powerful series of activities, including a Peoples’ Summit and a mass mobilization, under the slogan:

“Resist US-NATO Aggression, Bases, Militarization, Plunder, and War! Advance Peoples’ Struggles for Peace and Liberation!”

The program ran from June 20 to June 24, the day of the official NATO summit. On June 21, the Union of Cypriots took part in the opening of the Peoples’ Summit, which featured keynote speeches by Victor Garces, Vice Chairperson for Internal Affairs of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), and a solidarity message from Jorge Valero Briceño, Ambassador of Venezuela to Belgium. Participants from Kenya, Palestine, Réunion, the Philippines, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Colombia set the stage for dynamic workshops that addressed topics such as resisting militarism, student and youth organizing, mobilizing women against war, solidarity with Palestine, and opposing military spending.

The Union of Cypriots co-organized the workshop “Defying Rising Militarism and Fascism in Europe and the World,” where Alexandros Toufexis from the International Relations Committee spoke on these issues in the context of Europe and Cyprus. At the end of the Peoples’ Summit, Oz Karahan, President of the Union of Cypriots and Vice Chair for Europe of the ILPS, read out the unity statement underscoring the shared resolve to resist NATO and imperialist aggression and delivered the closing remarks.

On June 22, the Union of Cypriots joined the broad mobilization under the banner “Protest for Peace and Justice,” where thousands marched through The Hague to denounce NATO and call for an end to imperialist wars. Together with the Resist NATO bloc, participants carried banners created during the June 20 Art Build and staged an impactful effigy action. The rally featured speeches by prominent anti-imperialist voices, including Azra Sayeed, Secretary-General of the ILPS.

The Resist NATO campaign program also included activities such as “All Around the World Women Say No to NATO” on June 22 and the spirited “Bloc (NATO) Party” on June 24.

By endorsing the “Statement of Unity of the Peoples’ Summit to Resist NATO: Peoples of the World, Resist NATO and US-Led Imperialist Aggression! Advance People’s Rights, Just Peace, and Liberation!” the Union of Cypriots reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to struggle alongside peoples worldwide for sovereignty, peace, and liberation from imperialist domination.
