Cypriot Republicans: The Struggle for Unitary State and Constitutional Citizenship

16.05.2024 – On May 25, 2024 at 18.30 at the Home for Cooperation, we are keeping the ideas of the “Cypriot Republicans” alive.

The Cypriot Republicans, Ayhan Hikmet, Ahmet Muzaffer Gürkan, İhsan Ali and Derviş Ali Kavazoğlu, defended the Cypriot identity on the basis of constitutional citizenship through the newspaper “Cumhuriyet” they published together. The slogan of their struggle was “Cyprus belongs to Cypriots”.

Ahmet Muzaffer Gürkan and Ayhan Hikmet sacrificed their lives for the Republic of Cyprus on April 23, 1962 and Derviş Ali Kavazoğlu, together with Kostas Mişaulis, on April 11, 1965.

Whenever a patriot is killed, people say, “Their ideas live on!” No, they do not live on their own, we must keep their ideas alive…

Today, the Cypriot Republicans’ struggle for constitutional citizenship lights the way for a fully independent, truly democratic, pluralistic and unitary Republic of Cyprus.

On 25 May 2024, we invite you to the first commemoration event of the Cypriot Republicans.

Gözde Bedeloğlu, İbrahim Aziz, Kyriacos Tsimillis, Aziz Şah, Tonia Stavrinou, Panayiotis Taliotis and Oz Karahan will give short speeches at the event which will take place at the Solidarity House at 18.30.

The annual “Honorary Award” in memory of Ihsan Ali for the year 2024 will also be presented at the event.
