The Cyprus Papers and the “other occupation”

Cyprus Papers

25.08.2020 – As an organization, we have consistently voiced our stance regarding Cyprus’ “golden passport” program, which has recently garnered attention from the world and media. We consider passport selling as the second act of treason against our country, following the coup d’état in August 1974, which led to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Unfortunately, the Cyprus government lacks a comprehensive policy to address issues such as Turkish illegal settlers in the occupied area, the influx of foreign refugees into the free area, and foreign capitalists hiding on the island. Instead, it appears that the government is involved in covering up these crimes and even benefiting from them.

As an organization, we believe that these issues stem from the government’s incapability to effectively govern the country and pursue sustainable economic policies. This situation is the result of the existence of a political elite who perceive Cyprus as a “foster land” that can be easily commodified, rather than a true “homeland.

Currently, Cyprus has the highest number of foreigners per capita among EU countries. The ratio of the local population to the foreign population on the island is at a distressing level when compared to other European countries, resulting in social and cultural erosions in the lives of Cypriots.

As the Union of Cypriots, we will continue to fight against this “other occupation” alongside our fight against Turkey’s occupation, for the sake of both Greek-speaking and Turkish-speaking Cypriots, future generations, and the preservation of our island’s culture.

Respectfully announced to the public.
Union of Cypriots
